How to Store Garlic

Different garlic varieties have differing storage qualities. We find that our Purple Stripe Garlic tends to begin sprouting near the start of winter and if not planted becomes useless soon after. Our Rojo Galric on the other hand has a very long shelf life (if stored correctly); it can remain viable well through winter and into the following summer. Generally, some of the stored Rojo bulbs will start to deteriorate after being stored for more than 6 months so it is imperative to check your stock regularly and use up the bulbs that are beginning to become soft.

The best way to maintain garlic's long term freshness is to keep it in a dark, cool, airy place - NOT THE FRIDGE nor the cupboard under the sink. The most important thing is to allow air movement around the garlic. This can be achieved by hanging a plait or keeping smaller amounts in a bowl open to the air. Or in a special garlic pot or other vessel made of unglazed clay with holes which allows the garlic to breathe.

The main enemy of garlic is humidity, so ensure good circulation of air and keep your garlic out of direct sunlight and heat.
